Saturday we did a good deed.We filled our car with clothes, fabric and some goodies and drove to the brick makers place. Winter is here so the nights and mornings are cold and if you don’t have clothes for the winter and if you live under the conditions theses people do then you can need all the help you can get. My drivers family had collected a lot of fabric and cooking supplies. Me and my hubby did some cleaning in our wardrobes and then I brought some snacks and food, even candy .
Isn’t this was Christmas is all about? We who have everything and then more …I must admit that these visits aren’t easy.It leaves me with a hole in my heart. I see all these kids with absolutely nothing. Some not even clothes or shoes.

Then we drove to this lovely woman who takes care of her 4 grandchildren. Accident in the family left her alone with the kids. So some clothes, a few toys and some food made their day. She rents a piece of land where she grows flowers to sell so of course I always buy some of her. She even through in a whole bunch of vegetables too !

my heart was heavy but happy that we did go.

Christmas in a cake
Posted on December 4, 2016
the smell of oranges and cloves is spreading across our home and makes it really “Christmassy”…love it…

it’s a polenta cake with clove and orange caramel , and it’s just so yummy…recipe? of course ….it’s a recipe by Emma Grazette and I did use less cloves just a little
Ingredients
- 5oranges, 2 peeled and thinly sliced, 2 chopped and 1 juiced
- 120 g(4½ oz) butter, at room temperature, plus extra for greasing tin
- 280 g(10 oz) golden caster or raw sugar
- 3large eggs
- 1tbsp ground cloves
- 2 tsp baking powder
- 30 g(1¼ oz) plain flour, sifted
- 140 g(4 ¾ oz) polenta
- 120 g(4 ½ oz) ground almonds
To serve
- crème fraîche or yoghurt
Cook’s notes
Oven temperatures are for conventional; if using fan-forced (convection), reduce the temperature by 20˚C. | We use Australian tablespoons and cups: 1 teaspoon equals 5 ml; 1 tablespoon equals 20 ml; 1 cup equals 250 ml. | All herbs are fresh (unless specified) and cups are lightly packed. | All vegetables are medium size and peeled, unless specified. | All eggs are 55-60 g, unless specified.
Instructions
Preheat the oven to 180°C (350F/Gas 4). Butter a 20 cm (8 inch) round cake tin and line with baking paper. Lay the orange slices over the base of the tin.
Place the chopped oranges in a pan of water and bring to the boil. Cook for 20 minutes, then drain. Transfer to a blender (or use a hand blender) and blend until almost smooth.
In a bowl, cream the butter and 180 g (6¼ oz) of the sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs, one at a time, combining well between each addition. Mix in the blended oranges, then fold in two-thirds of the ground cloves, followed by the baking powder, flour, polenta and ground almonds. Pour the mixture into the cake tin and bake for 1 hour, or until a skewer inserted into the middle of the cake comes out clean. Allow the cake to cool in its tin for 10 minutes, then turn out onto a plate.
To make the clove and orange caramel, heat the rest of the sugar and the orange juice in a heavy-based pan, until the sugar has dissolved and the liquid has thickened. When it turns to golden brown, immediately take it off the heat and stir in the remaining ground cloves. Add a splash of water if the caramel is too thick to drizzle – it should be the consistency of honey. Drizzle the syrup all over the cake and serve with a dollop of crème fraiche or yoghurt.

the local artist who has done all the beautiful wall paintings should have put his name on the walls so that we can tell who he is…I know it’s a he because the villagers told us so…
